Saved modules
Save reusable blocks once, drop them into any email. Optionally connect a module to multiple emails so editing it updates them all.
Modules are reusable, full-width sections you save once and drop into any email — headers, footers, hero rows, CTAs, 3-column highlights, product grids. EmailBuilder ships with a starter library; you build your own from there.
Saving a section as a module
In any email, right-click a section → Save as Module. A dialog asks for:
- Title — what to call it (e.g. "Footer with social", "Three-card promo").
- Tags — stored on the module as metadata. No UI currently filters by them, so they're optional today.
- Category — where it lives in the sidebar (Navigation, Hero, Sections, Content, …).
- Linked module toggle — see below.
The module is now in your library and shows up in the left sidebar of every email and module editor in your account.
Inserting modules
Two ways:
- Drag from the sidebar. Find your module under the right category and drag its preview onto the canvas — the preview itself is the drag handle. Drop it where you want it.
- Use the empty-section menu. Click an empty section and pick the Module chip, or press ⌘M / Ctrl+M. A typeahead opens — start typing the module name. Arrow keys to navigate, Enter to insert, Esc to cancel.
After inserting, the new section is auto-selected so its properties open in the right panel.
Editing a module
Open Modules from the top navigation (or visit /modules). Each module has its own editor — the same UI as email editing, but scoped to that one module. Save changes; they take effect immediately in your account.
Connected modules (linked)
By default, dragging a module copies its MJML into your email. The copy is independent — later edits to the module don't change emails that already used it.
A linked module is different: it's inserted as a reference, not a copy. The email's source contains:
<mj-module module-id="64abc123def456" module-title="Site Header"/>
At render time (preview, send, export), the reference is replaced with the module's current MJML. So if you have one Site Header linked into 50 emails and you change the logo in the module, all 50 emails reflect the change on their next render — no bulk-edit needed.
When to link vs copy
| Link (connected) | Copy (default) | |
|---|---|---|
| Editing one place updates all uses | ✓ | ✗ |
| Different emails can drift from the original | ✗ | ✓ |
| Good for | Headers, footers, brand-wide CTAs, legal blocks | Hero sections, one-off layouts, anything you want to customise per-email |
Turn linking on or off per module in Modules → Settings → Linked Module. A module's link state can be changed any time — changing it doesn't affect already-inserted instances.
Working with linked modules in the editor
When you hover a linked section, a small 🔗 [module title] badge appears at the top — at a glance you can see which module it points at. The inner content is non-editable in the visual canvas; to change what's inside, you edit the module itself.
Select the section and the right-hand property panel shows two actions:
- Edit Module — opens the module's own editor in a new tab. Save your changes there and every email using this module reflects them on its next render.
- Disconnect — replaces the reference with an inline copy of the module's current MJML. After disconnecting, this email holds its own independent copy — later edits to the module no longer flow through here.
The linked section still supports the usual section operations:
- Reorder (Move Up / Move Down or drag) — you're moving the reference, not the content.
- Duplicate — both copies point at the same module, so editing the module updates both.
- Delete — removes the reference from this email; the module itself is untouched.
Bookmarks and the system library
EmailBuilder ships a system module library (Navigation, Hero, Footer collections, etc.) that any account can browse and fork. From the Modules page:
- Save — copies the module to your account; edit freely.
- Fork — same as Save, but opens the editor immediately.
- Bookmark — pin it to the "Bookmarked" category in your sidebar without copying. Useful for system modules you want quick access to without cluttering your library.
Tips
- Use linked modules for the chrome of your emails (header, footer, legal). Use copies for the body (hero, content, CTA).
- Name modules clearly —
⌘Mtypeahead matches the title only, so "Footer with social" is easier to find than "Footer v2 final". - Pick the right Category when you save — that's how the sidebar groups your library. Tags currently aren't surfaced in any filter UI; the Category is what makes modules findable.
- Save sections you find yourself rebuilding. If you've written the same 3-column layout twice, save it — your future self will thank you.
