Billing

Plans, the 30-day trial, usage limits, and how to manage your subscription.

EmailBuilder bills through Paddle. Plans are monthly or yearly; you can change between them any time. New accounts start with a 30-day trial of any paid tier — no card required to evaluate.

What counts against limits

Limits fall into two categories:

Lifetime (DB-counted):

  • emails — every email/send/template document ever created in your account
  • templates — same, narrowed to templates
  • users — current team members
  • projects — current projects

Per-cycle (resets each billing period):

  • aiAssistant — AI calls (chat, composer, branding extraction)
  • aiImages — AI-generated images
  • csvSends — sends to a CSV (not list/segment)
  • espSends — sends to a list or segment via an ESP
  • gmailAddonInserts — templates inserted via the Gmail add-on
  • sendsExports — exports / API-generated sends

The Billing page shows current usage for each category, the limit for your plan, and a progress bar.

The 30-day trial

When you sign up:

  • You're placed on a 30-day internal trial of any paid plan you choose. No card.
  • During the trial you can change plans freely — change Maestro → Studio → back to Maestro without paying anything.
  • When the trial deadline arrives (or earlier if you enter a card), the first real billing date is set. If you add a card on day 20, your first charge is on day 30 of the trial, not the day you added the card — the trial is honoured to the end.
  • subscription.status is trialing until your first successful payment.

Trial days remaining show in the top-right of the Billing page.

Changing plans

From the Billing page:

  • Click Switch plan under any tier.
  • For trialing accounts → the change is instant and free.
  • For active subscriptions → Paddle prorates the difference. Upgrading partway through a cycle charges the difference now; downgrading credits the unused portion to your next invoice.

Switching billing cycles (monthly ↔ yearly) follows the same proration logic.

Cancelling

Use the Manage subscription button on the Billing page. It opens Paddle's customer portal where you can:

  • Cancel — your subscription continues until the end of the current period, then drops to Playground.
  • Pause — subscription paused until a date you pick. Useful for seasonal businesses.
  • Update payment method.
  • Update billing email.
  • Download invoices.

After cancellation, your data stays — templates, sends, contacts, integrations — but features above Playground limits stop working. Re-subscribing restores access immediately.

Invoices

Paddle handles invoicing. Each successful payment generates an invoice emailed to your billing address. To download past invoices, open the customer portal from Billing → Manage subscription and visit the Invoices tab.

For VAT/GST-eligible accounts, enter your tax ID in the customer portal — Paddle adjusts invoicing accordingly. For business addresses outside the supplier's country, Paddle applies the appropriate reverse charge or zero-rating per local rules.

Hitting a limit

When you try to use a feature whose limit you've exceeded, the action is blocked and the UI offers an upgrade path to the next plan that allows it. For per-cycle features, you can also wait until the cycle resets — the Billing page shows the next reset date.

Admins on the account can request per-feature overrides via support — useful if you need a one-time bump (e.g. an extra batch of AI images) without permanently upgrading.

Feature gating in the UI

Throughout the app, features above your plan show a small lock icon with a tooltip explaining which plan unlocks them. Clicking the lock takes you to the Billing page with that feature highlighted in the plan comparison.

Refunds

We offer a 14-day refund policy for first-time paid subscriptions. Email [email protected] within 14 days of your first charge for a full refund.

Refunds for subsequent billing periods are at our discretion. See the Terms of Service for full details.
